Registry-style ceremonies by civil celebrants, not a government registry office. No fuss, no frills, no wedding. Just paperwork.

Who Can Get Married in Sydney?

Most adults can get married in Sydney.

That includes overseas visitors.

Usually, you can marry if

  • you are both at least 18
  • neither of you is already married
  • you are not in a prohibited relationship
  • you both understand the nature of marriage
  • you both agree freely
  • you give a valid NOIM
  • you provide the right documents
  • you both attend in person with two adult witnesses

Do we need to be Australian citizens?

No.

You do not need to be an Australian citizen or resident to marry here.

What if one of us is under 18?

Marriage under 18 is rare and needs court approval. Most couples should assume both people need to be 18 or over.

What if one of us has been married before?

That can be fine, but the earlier marriage must have legally ended and you need evidence of that.

See Marriage After Divorce if that applies to you.
