There are two different things people often mean when they say marriage certificate.
The certificate you get on the day
After the marriage, you receive a ceremonial certificate.
It is a nice record of the day, but it is usually not the document banks, passports, or government departments want.
The official certificate
The official marriage certificate comes from NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages after the marriage is registered.
That is the certificate most people need for:
- a change of name
- passport updates
- official records
Where to get it
You order it through NSW Births, Deaths and Marriages.
Their fees and processing times are set by them.
